Hello, this is DIVEMAP Today, we’d like to introduce two Japanese sister divers who came all the way from Hong Kong to Jeju Island for scuba diving. When I saw the address they sent with their booking, I simply assumed they were Japanese sisters living in Hong Kong. But when we actually met, I realized there was a little more to their story. They are mixed-race, with both Hong Kong and Japanese backgrounds, and live in Hong Kong while speaking Cantonese, English, and Japanese. As we talked, I also learned that they identify themselves not simply as Chinese or Japanese, but as Hong Kongers, which is an important part of their identity.

For this trip, we went diving at Beomseom Island in Jeju. At first, I wasn’t expecting too much from their logbook, but once we got in the water, they showed much more stable diving skills than I had anticipated. They told me that they regularly dive at popular sites around Hong Kong and had received fairly solid training there. Hong Kong has a variety of dive sites nearby and is also a convenient hub for traveling overseas, so their actual diving experience was much more varied than their logged number of dives suggested. They had also dived in several parts of Japan, including Izu, Wakayama, and Okinawa.
Having experienced diving in many different places, the sisters said that the underwater world of Jeju had an unexpected charm of its own. They especially enjoyed the underwater terrain around Beomseom, the scenery below the surface, and the variety of marine life they encountered. That’s one of the great things about diving somewhere new. It’s not just about adding another dive site to your logbook. Every ocean has its own scenery, atmosphere, and character.
Even though it’s all scuba diving, every new destination brings something different. We hope this Jeju diving trip becomes another memorable chapter in their journey as divers. And I’m already looking forward to wondering where we might meet again under the water next time.
